Giving us a glimpse as to what life will be like once SOPA and PIPA get passed, the federal government shut down megaupload.com today and charged 7 people connected to it with running an international criminal enterprise. In response, Anonymous shut down the websites for the Department of Justice, the MPAA, and the RIAA.

At issue of course is SOPA and PIPA, which will give companies and the government the ability to shut down websites that are infringing on copyright. One of the many problems with this is that these companies will simply lie about what is or isn’t infringement if they don’t like what is being published.

Here are two emails (one and two) from Fox saying I was infringing on their intellectual property for publishing pictures of Megan Fox and Anna Faris skinny dipping while filming ‘Jennifers Body’ and ‘What’s Your Number’. Megan Fox was at a lake in Vancouver. Faris was in Boston harbor. These were pictures of public figures in a public place, taken by a third party. You can’t do something in public and claim it’s private. Fox didn’t own these pictures, but they said they did simply because they didn’t want them to get out.

Under SOPA, they could shut a website down, simply because they didn’t like what it was publishing. Having Megan Fox take her clothes off doesn’t constitute “intellectual property”. I assure you I thought of that long before ‘Jennifers Body’, and I have several hundred photshops to prove it.

I've been busy.

Sunday I watched an incredibly depressing football game. And Conan O'Brien Can't Stop.

Work has been crazy busy.

I got a cashmere stocking cap.

We've been watching a lot of the show Chopped.

I traded in some DVDs for Blu Rays at Best Buy today.

I bought a new sleeping bag at Target.

I ate a delicious hamburger.

I got a cool pair of shoes from MyHabit.com. But they sent me the wrong size.

I bought a train ticket.

I am going to Chicago for my friends Bday.

We have a trip to FL planned in the spring.

We ad lunch at Cheeburger Cheeburger. It was pretty damn tasty.

And lots of other stuff not even worth typing out.

The Descendants-

This is more than worthy of being added to my best movies I saw of 2011 list.

Complex characters that your grow to understand and care about. Great performances all the way around. And no typical hollywood cop-outs. People behave fairly real, they don't have all the answers and don't appear on screen just to serve some purpose of moving a plot point forward.

A great movie you should see.

And Nancy picked up on a very subtle thing in the very end of the movie that really changed the tone of the film. I think her thought is spot on. If you see it we can talk about it.

Will surely be up for best picture.

Restaurant Review

Mosaic-

We went to the new one on Manchester last night. We've been meaning to go since it opened, because it's so near to where we live.

The service was good. The staff was very nice and attentive.

We both ordered the inside out bloody mary. It was ok. Nothing wrong with it but not a drink I would order again.

The food:

Ahi Tuna tartare- It was chopped up and tossed with a few simple ingredients rather than whole slices. It made the consistency a bit mushy. The taste was ok, but the texture was not great.

Creole lobster and crawfish risotto- Way too salty.

Truffled frites- Not what I was expecting. They were chips. Had a very good taste, but not what I was expecting. And they were cooked a bit uneven. Going from very crisp to very soggy.

Grilled fresh asparagus- They were what it says. Maybe a hair under cooked for my taste, but fine.

Flash fried baby artichoke hearts- The breading overpowered the artichokes.

Pot stickers- These were fine. Fried rather than steamed. The peanut sauce that came with them was way to overpowering for my taste. But on their own they were ok.

Pulled Korean BBQ pork apple (the servers suggestion)- This was my favorite thing. The combo of tastes and textures was great.

While we weren't thrilled with this visit, I am still intrigued by their brunch and bloody mary menu. Maybe at some point we would be willing to give that a chance. But unlike baseball with me and restaurants you get two strikes and you're out.

The New Year

So I had grand plans on new years eve. It was the first new years we were going to spend in STL in quite some time. But... Not all goes as planned.

Friday morning Elias got out of bed at 8am (very odd for a teenager on Christmas break) went into the bathroom and threw up. I gave him shit about being hung over. He said he wasn't that he had a stomach virus. I though that was just an excuse.

So then Saturday Nancy and I were getting ready to go out to dinner with friends, but first we would need to drop Jett off with grandma. a half hour before we were gong to leave Jett threw up. He said he felt fine. Nancy was going to stay home on new years eve with a sick kid and let me go out with our friends.

Jett was feeling horrible and in bed before I left. Poor little guy.

As I was about a half a mile from our house, I thought if I felt ok. Or if it was just in my head. I got to my friends house for a few pre dinner drinks. We then headed to the restaurant. After we parked I didn't feel so good. But once again that feeling passed. We went to the bar in the restaurant to wait for the rest of our friends. Then it hit me. I went to the the restaurant bathroom. All was not well. I told my friends I had to leave.

As I drove I hoped I could make it home before it hit me again. I did.

Jett and I spent NYE in bed together spewing from both ends every 20 minutes. From about 6pm till 3am. Then once that phase was over then it was just aches and pains and a high fever.

By Sunday night we were both back to normal.

Not the way I wanted to spend New Years.

Thanks Nancy for taking care of us all night. And right now she is hoping she isn't the next one in the house to get it.

We Need To Talk About Kevin-

Utterly pointless.

Since it's told by going from the present to the past, we know what's coming. So I was thinking all was not as it seemed. But it was.

Spoilers:
A man and woman get married.
Have a boy.
He has some developmental issues.
The mother doesn't cope well.
They have a girl.
When the boy is a teenager he kills his father, sister and some school mates.
The mom is an outcast in her town.
End.

The Woman-

Laughably bad.

In looking up info on the movie on IMDB.com it is a sequel to a movie called The Offspring. All based on a trilogy of books.

I'm not sure how the books play out, but this movie was a bad dark comedy. The father in the movie kept reminding me of a poor man's Will Ferrel. So it made it even harder to try and take the movie seriously.

The director Lucky McKee sure has taken a turn for the worse ever since his first movie May.

Contagion-

A good movie about an unknown disease sweeping across the planet.

While it has it's flaws, (the trailers made it look much better) it still has a scary enough look at how fragile our society is.

I would've liked to see a little more of the publics doubt, being a cause of the rampant spread. Since I personally can remember hearing the news reports of H1N1 or SARS and it was the same old over media 24 hour news hype.

Overall the movie is worth seeing.

Once again, another lists of my opinion.

In no particular order:

Win Win-
Saw it on a plane flying back from Denmark. Even in seeing it on a shitty seat back screen, it was good. So I bought it on blu ray.

Super-
A dark, funny twisted super hero movie.

The Tree of Life-
People either love it or hate it. I loved it.

Super 8-
Good storytelling fun.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes-
A great new take on an old classic movie that I love.

Drive-
Simple and badass.

Life In A Day-
Amazing.

I didn't see that many of the movies that came out this year. Although many of the ones that did come out in 2011 hat I did see, in no way deserve to make this list.
I watched a lot of other good movies that were not 2011 releases. But you'd have to go through my blog archives for the year to see what they were.

You need to see this movie.

Just so cool. An amazing project that so many people participated in and made happen.

There were so many people and stories in it that I would love to see an entire documentary about.

So in no particular order here are my favorite albums of 2011:

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead- Tao of the Dead
I love pretty much anything they do. And the final 16+ minute song is awesome.

TV On The Radio- Nine Types of Light
They continue to make cool music. I couldn't get enough of the first track on the album.

The Black Keys- El Camino
A slight departure from their norm. But still full of good.

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi- Rome
An album version of a spaghetti western.

The Flaming Lips- Gummy Song Fetus
Sorry no link to buy this. You either have to track one down or find a torrent on your own. It took a bit to grow on me but once it did, I craved to hear it.

Foo Fighters- Wasting Light
Still rocking hard.

The Knux- Eraser
They do rap well.

Scream- Complete Control Sessions
A new album from one of my favorite punk rock bands from the 80s. How could I not love it?

Social Distortion- Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes
Same formula they have been doing forever. And still working.

Wugazi- 13 Chambers
Sorry no link to buy this either. Go to their site and you can download it. A remix of Wu Tang and Fugazi. These are a few of my favorite things.

So those are 10 albums that came out this year that I like quite a bit. I got a ton of other music but not stuff released this year. So check out some of the above. Maybe you will find something you like.
