The St. Louis Ad World

I just found out about another 3 person agency/creative collective that has sprouted up. There are so many I think I've lost count.

It's nice to see this happen. That so many people are having that nothing to lose attitude.

And even though I too am involved in one of these start-ups of sort, I question how many agencies/agency type things can St. Louis support. While none of these, strictly look for business in St. Louis, I would think that all of them will at least a little.

So when do they start merging together? When does one take off and start growing quickly? And when do the ones just stop and it's members go get jobs at other agencies?

What if instead of merging to become a bigger agency or excelling/disbanding, these smaller shops formed a collective of sorts? Like a small shop commune, where if one shop was too busy to take on a hot project, they pooled it out to another small shop and took a finders fee percentage?

Interesting theory. But I would guess that egos and money would get in the way far too much for that to be able to happen. I think if these small ones start to have expertise areas, many could work together in suggesting a client to each other that may not be they type of work they do.

Becasue when you have 3 or 4 people you truly have no way to be able to do everything a client might need.

And if you say you can. You are lying.

What if all the small ad agencies got together and we had a big game of kick the can? That game is awesome.

I think it could work, with the right people who had a similar mindset. That kind of flexiblility and resourcefulness can go a long way in demonstrating true partnership with clients.

I think combining or merging is on the idealistic side of the coin - doesn't mean it can't happen, just a little optimistic. However, I do see two areas of opportunity: karma and sin. And both are in, these days.
