It was 15 years ago today that I got hit by a car on my motorcycle. It's also my friend Mark's Birthday.
One that night 15 years ago he and I were out for his birthday. We were at the old Cicero's. We left there and were headed to the Hi-Pointe.
Heading south on Skinker a car headed north started to make a left turn in front of us. We were riding staggered with mark ahead of me. He pulled hard to the right and went around the front of their car. I was pulling left to go around back of them.
That's when they stopped across both lanes of traffic.
I hit their back passenger quarter panel. The impact snapped their rear axel.
I flew through the air over their car. Everything was clear and in slow motion.
I hit the ground and got up quickly. I remember grabbing my right hand and thinking I needed to squeeze it back together. It felt like a wet bag full of chicken bones.
The car that was behind us was being driven by and off duty EMT worker.
The ambulance came. They drove to the hospital pretty slow.
I lucked out that night. A tremendous surgeon Dr. Susan Mckinion was working that night. They put my hand back together with plates, screws and pins.
The next morning I had to have an emergency carpel tunnel surgery.
Lawsuits and rehab followed for a long time.
But in the end everything worked out. My hand mostly works at 100%. And I have this awesome story to tell.
Oh...and happy birthday Mark.

That's some story. Hope you were wearing a helmet. I always do and anticipate my first accident...havent had one yet, but they say it's a matter of time. I love it too much to stop. We're just waay on the lookout for stupid drivers.
It made me quit riding for a couple of years, but then was right back at it. It is way too much fun to stop.
You were very lucky to have Susan McKinnon as your Dr. She treated me 4 years ago for a rare nerve condition called a winging scapula. She diagnosed it, told me what I could and couldn't do, and told me when I would recover. Everything she said was true. I've heard she is the best neurosurgeon in the US. She's also in one of my hard yoga classes. Cool story.
I remember that night well...I think I was already at the Hi Pointe waiting for you guys and thinking "What the hell is taking them so long?" then Mark showed up later and told us what happened.
