Strike, Spare.

So the writers guild is on strike. I am sure I don't understand all the reasons they have decided to strike but one of the reasons I keep hearing is that they want more money because of new revenue sources, such as DVDs and online content.

Sure I want the writers to be paid fairly, but this all makes me think that unions have mostly worn out their welcome. It was one thing when unions were protecting workers from situations where workers could die, but now we have white collar workers who are paid well to do something creative for a living complaining because they want more.

Maybe I should form an art directors union. Because when I created that logo for a company they told me it was for their business card and letterhead. And then I find out they want to use it on a shirt and a billboard. Or that TV spot I did isn't just being used on TV, it's running in movie theaters and the company has it on their website. Where's my cut?

But no. I am paid to create something and then the company that paid for it gets to do with it as they please. This is how I view the writers. They are paid to write a show. Once they create the show the studio can air it where they like.

Don't like what you make as a writer? Do something more.

Do recording engineers get royalties from cd sales of bands they recorded? Do they get more if the band decides to sell their song for a TV spot or a ringtone? Not they were paid to do a job. They did it, they got paid, next job.

So unless I can round up enough people to form my art directors union and start to really cash in myself, I will stick with my stance here.

"Do recording engineers get royalties from cd sales of bands they recorded?",

actually engineers and producers make crazy money off CD sales from bands

they are called points and if you want an interesting read about major labels, points and other financial matters google "Steve Albini points" for an article he wrote about 13 years ago on the subject

Interesting. I will check that out. I wonder if their points will also get them money off of new revenues?

Maybe they do, and maybe they don't, but for sure the writers of those songs get royalties.

Amy Pollard did a hilarious editorial about this last saturday night on Weekend Update, where she compared the writers salaries to the producers of these shows.

Perhaps you should really examine your true feelings about writers...
