I just re-watched The Shining. I hadn't seen it in years and years. I hated the movie when I first saw it in the theater when it originally came out. But that was mostly because I had read the book and it wasn't what I was suspecting at all.
I have also seen the made for TV version that completely follows the book and it sucks too.
So anyway, after watching the Kubrick version, I still hate it. Not because it doesn't follow the book, but because the pacing is awful. The way scenes and time move is really bad. The sound-track is headache inducing. There are some good things, the sound design is great, and there are some cool shots. But mostly it's Jack Nicholson over acting, and bad music cues telling you the viewer that HEY! THIS PART IS SCARY! The movie is far too long too, 2:30, that is way too long for any scary/suspense movie. And so much could be trimmed down.
After all these years it is still a movie that could've used a better script and better editing. With Hollywood remaking tons of horror films, this is a movie I would love to see remade.
