Never Use One Of These

When I was still in the bicycle industry and we started Big Shark we agreed we wouldn't carry bicycle child seats.

Trailers are fine. But the kid seats are an injury waiting to happen. What the hell are people thinking? Throwing 30+ pounds onto your bike over the rear wheel. It throws off your bikes center of gravity and your balance on the bike. And the people using these are never very bike savoy people anyway.

I ride my bike a lot and I can still fall from time to time.

Which all leads me to what I saw on my way home from work today.

A woman with her kid in a bike seat, slowly turning around on a narrow bike path. The mom lost her balance and the bike started to go down. Luckily for her and her kid she caught it before it hit the ground, but she was a few inches from not being so lucky.

These things are horrible. Never allow anyone you like or care about to buy one.

I was the passenger on one of these in the early 1970's and went down.

ironically, i rode my daughter all around on one of these on my old peugeot. Never had an issue with balance or control. Made wheelies a little easier....maybe it was the helmets? (i kid, i kid!)
