So I was just told a story by a guy who's wife is a teacher.
A parent was mad because she had been mispronouncing the kids name.
He wrote the name down for us as he told us this story and asked us how we would have pronounced the name.
The name was:
Le-A
The group of us all assumed it was LEE-Ah
That is how his wife had been pronouncing it.
The kids parent informed her that the "dash" was not silent.
The name is pronounced
LE-DASH-AH
I was left speechless and with an urge to post this story.
