Advertising is a Weird Business

Well it's full of interesting people but no matter where you go, big agency, small agency or freelance project, the clients seem to be borderline crazy.

I could rant on and on about all sorts of crazy client stories and requests, but I will just use the most recent example.

I am working on a simple freelance brochure. The client has a deadline. They have been told to meet that deadline they need to be responsive and make decisions. They also need to provide their logo (not as some crappy GIF they pull off their website) and hi-res images that they want used. They don't seem to be able to do any of those things, but of course are still in a hurry to meet their deadline.

I often compare the relationship between client and designer to that of a more blue collar profession to make people understand how crazy they are acting.

When a designer or agency makes a request upon the client to be able to complete/do a job, it's not just done for kicks. It has a true purpose. Imagine you want to hire a painter to paint a room. He tells you that to do the job, the furniture will need to be moved out, before he can start. He shows up and you have not moved the furniture. Do you think he can paint your room?

So yes clients, you are paying for services, but that doesn't mean you can expect to not have to contribute to the job you want completed.
