Interactive Creative Director

Why?

I've seen more and more job postings for this position. But it confuses me.

Sure you want someone in a CD position to understand interactive, but what exactly makes one an interactive creative director? Do they need to know how to program? Do they need to be able to do flash?

I guess that answer would depend on the size of the place.

But you don't see ads for TV creative director, or print creative director, or promotions creative director. Yet each of these also has it's own fundamental elements of knowledge of how to do them properly.

I think all it comes down to is an understanding of what you can do and where you can push any medium you work in. Which is what a creative director is supposed to be able to do.

Unnecessarily spicing up a job title makes the agency seem a bit out of touch and self-important. Like your take on "Interactive", or prefacing anything with "Strategic". "Strategy" obviously figures into any business scenario, so it's redundant to attach it to any title. Is there such a thing as a non-strategic Director of Business Development? I think not.

Overly long titles are suspect as well...

I believe that many of the same businesses that make the above mistakes also use phrases such as "respective of", "fully integrated" and "proverbial ass".

I'm a fully integrated proverbial ass focused on out-of-the-box strategic solutions that meet respective client needs through the development of written words and collaborative ideation.

We don't have titles, but I suppose that would be mine if I had one. It's part creative and part technologist. Knowing cms speak, database crap, and a combo of all the things you mention. I agree a lot of titles are crap, but this one makes sense to me when looking for employees. It's more specific verses general.

But that goes back to agency size.

True. But when I look at things like packaging creative director positions I know immediately it's not up my alley, even though I could do it. My experience there isn't nearly as much. I think most of these titles are really referring to team leads, verses running the show completely anyway. I'm going to open up a cereal bar and get out of this business anyway. Ha.
