Crooked Vultures

It's a supergroup I am very interested in. They are playing at the Metro in Chicago at midnight tonight. The supergroup is comprised of Nirvana / Foo Fighters' David Grohl, Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age and John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.

This is supposedly a demo.

Jeff,

I saw the show last night, some thoughts about it include:

the show was really really good

sounded very QOTSA-like just because Josh did all the lead singing

band seemed to be having a great time even with some obvious first show ever jitters

super tight, could tell they've been rehearsing and not just swapping files through email in order to learn the songs

of the 75 minute set (not sure how many songs) I'd say that 40 - 45 were as good as some of the best QOTSA or FF material, 20 minutes were good but not super memorable and 15 minutes was okay but wouldn't expect the stuff to be played live if they ever continued on as a group and did a second album

I did memory lane work and realized it has been 20+ years since I first saw Dave Grohl play drums (in Scream, Almalgamated Transit Union Hall, July 1989) and almost 18 years since I first saw Josh play (Kyuss, Lawrence, KS, The Outhouse, opening for the Dwarves) so it was cool to see them perform together again (saw Grohl play drums for QOTSA in 2002 in Detroit small club show) and have them look so happy to be playing with a rock legend who has had some influence on their music over the years. John Paul Jones seemed equally as excited/happy to be on stage with them as well.

I would have loved to go to this, but alas, we weren't able to score tickets... next time!
