While driving to the office there was as tory on the radio about flexible hours becoming more of the norm in the work place. I am lucky enough to have a decent amount of freedom when it comes to the work day, but I am still here at my desk more often than not. But I can easily come in late or leave early if there is a sick kid, or school event or anything of the sort.
The story talked about many of the newer workforce as well as people my age wanting to be able to enjoy their lives now, since no one any longer believes in the idea of work hard, retire, live the easy enjoyable life. People want to live for now and make the most of their lives everyday because the idea of losing your job at any moment is all too real.
I do think that the work week and 40 hour week needs a drastic overhaul. It no longer fits in with the world we live in. Most families are two income families. And school hours don't mesh with work hours.
Is it because everyone has too much of a sense of self entitlement? Could we all stand to get by on one income? WHile I think we all could make some cutbacks, I personally don't live an extravagant life, and while the basic bills could be paid on a single income, the things like building savings or saving for the kids college would not be possible.
Check out the inflation calculator for a bit of insight to see where the two income family went from a source of extra income to a necessity.
So do you think a new work place revolution is going to be headed our way?

I heard that story too and found the generational angle of interest. Of course it makes sense that those with kids at home would appreciate the flextime, but it also makes sense for anyone with a bit of self-discipline. I can think of plenty of 8+ hour work days where due to the chaos of the office setting I got about half done of what I could have accomplished in a few hours of solitude at home. I'm constantly tethered to my blackberry anyway, so I don't see much difference between responding to emails while I'm brushing my teeth or sitting at my desk.
Oh and I particularly loved the part about how workplaces claim they have flextime but don't really live up to it in reality. Go figure.
