I never saw avatar but had heard that it looked cool but the plot seemed completely rehashed. This would make it seem so, I guess. If you saw Avatar does this sum it up?

Yes that's very good. There are so many movies the plot could be compared to, I'm sure you've heard "Dances With Wolves staring Smurfs". I think my favorite movie with same plot (and perhaps closest in story) is David Lynch's Dune.
