Letter to the editor

It seems like I will have another letter to the editor published in the Post. My previous two were on the situation of the St. Louis school district. The one I wrote yesterday dealt with the new fire chief. There are cries of racism because of the person promoted to chief. I have no ties to the fire department, so I really don't care who is the chief. When I read the article yesterday the statement that stood out to me was the fact the guy who got the job scored the highest on the test for the job. Now unless this is an outright lie, shouldn't the best person for the job get the job?

I have no idea what this story has to do with race or how a test for promotions could be biased. One firefighter that took the test said that he couldn't pass the test because he lacked test taking skills but knew he could do the job. Don't positions of leadership require a well rounded candidate? If not being able to read means that the test is biased towards people that can't read, I can understand that, but how is that racially biased. It seems as though Sherman was the one who was acting as an oppressor, not allowing promotions and keeping people from advancing, not a test. It should always be the best person for the job. We all have things we need to overcome. If sucking at taking test is your bag, then work hard to be better at taking test.
