I just read this story about a flight from Chicago to London that only had 5 passengers on it. Now I wonder how much in advance they knew they were only going to have 5 passengers? IF they had a days notice, couldn't they have sent out an email to their list of customers and offer a $10 trip to London? OR whatever super cheap price that would work. Sure they would still not make a ton of money but they would put butts in seats and get a plane full of people to London where those same people would spend money. And it would build good PR rather than the bad PR they are now getting from Green groups about the wasted fuel.
I never really understood the airlines ticket price structure anyway.
If it were up to me (and it's not like I have a clue), I would offer very cheap flights booked way in advance, say three months or more. Then the price would climb by a set amount each day till a few days before the flight. then you could have several extreme drops in price on available seats. Sure they all have their last minute email deals they send out, but they are never truly cheap. If they offered super cheap fares at the last minute they could most likely always have a full plane. And to me making $25 to fill a seat is better than getting nothing for an empty seat. And more travel boosts more cities economies.
Just my thoughts.

I think easyjet operates like that. the earlier you buy the ticket, the cheaper it is. As the seats gets filled up, prices goes up. The idea hasn't come over state side yet unfortunately with regards to airlines. but greyhound recently launched Bolt Bus.
