CEO Pay

While Nancy and I were driving in the car today a radio talk show was talking about high CEO pay. A caller called in and brought up a good point about actors and athletes also making crazy amounts of money per year, yet people seem to focus on the out of control CEO pay.

I stopped and thought about this. Why do people not get as pissed when they hear about the latest baseball player 100 million dollar deal.

Then it came to me. I fully understand what a great actor or athlete does better than a mediocre or bad athlete. But I have no idea what a CEO does at all. I rally have no clue what they do each day.

Hell at an agency I used to work at I had many one on one conversations with the worldwide CEo of the company. But you know what... I have no idea what his job was. I didn't know what he did. Sure he'd come in town and talk about the company vision, blah blah blah. But then the next day, it was business as usual and nothing about my work day was any different.

During my time at that job there were at least 3 or 4 CEOs and I never noticed a bit of difference.

So that is why I think people get pissed about CEO pay. They can't understand why someone who has a job they have no clue about makes millions upon millions no matter if they do a good job or a horrible job.

Yeah, I think you're right.

Also, watching Albert Pujols hit a home run or Angelina Jolie raid a tomb is much more entertaining than watching a CEO conduct a board meeting. I think that may be part of it, too.

As high as most pro athletes' salaries are, there are celebrities that make much more. Everyone went nuts when A-Roid got a 10 year, $252M contract in 2001 or so...Oprah makes more than that in a year. And, as I heard Whitey Herzog say in a recent interview, "She can't hit a curveball."
